Agri-Food Sector

 

Overall, Canada is the fifth largest agricultural exporter in the world, and the agriculture and agri-food industry employs one in eight (2.3 million) Canadians.

 

The province of Ontario is home to Canada’s largest food processing sector with 3,000 businesses employing about 100,000 people.

 

 

Trade Relationships

 

Ontario agri-food businesses export to 168 countries around the world. In 2015, Ontario agri-food exports brought in more than $14 billion. Top commodities grown in Ontario include grain products, vegetables, oil seeds and red meats.

 

The United States and Canada enjoy the largest bilateral trading relationship in the world and the United States is Ontario’s number one trading partner, accounting for agri-food exports worth $10.5 billion in 2015. Ontario’s top exports to the United States are grain products, vegetables, sugar and confectionary products.

 

Canada and Mexico also enjoy a growing trade partnership — in 2014, Canada was the second largest supplier of agri-food products to Mexico.

 

Mexico is Ontario’s sixth-largest agri-food trading partner with $130 million in agri-food sales for 2015. Ontario’s top exports to Mexico are grains, chocolate and animal feeds.
