Ontario Fostering Economic Renewal in Marathon

Project Will Help With Economic Diversification And Expansion

Marathon, Ont. -- The Ontario government is investing in economic renewal and community partnerships in the Town of Marathon, Michael Gravelle, MPP for Thunder Bay-Superior North, announced today on behalf of John Gerretsen, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

"I am pleased that the province is investing in this important project," said Gravelle. "The McGuinty government clearly recognizes the value of economic diversification for the long-term sustainability of municipalities in northwestern Ontario."

The Ontario government will contribute $16,500 to help Marathon implement its Business Retention and Expansion initiative, a community-based, volunteer-driven economic development initiative that will encourage the growth and stability of local businesses in Marathon.

"The support of the provincial government is vital in helping us leverage the potential of Marathon's economy and enhance business development, job creation and partnerships," said Sharon Hacio, Town of Marathon chief administrative officer. "We are pleased to be moving forward with this project."

Today's investment was made through Ontario's Rural Economic Development (RED) program, which invests in projects that support sustainable rural economies and community partnerships. Through the RED program, the provincial government and its partners are working together to make rural Ontario strong, healthy and prosperous.
