The Government of Ontario is committed to building strong, sustainable rural communities. This commitment involves working to ensure that Ontario has the best possible communications infrastructure in place to support the province's broadband connectivity targets. To this end, the government of Ontario has committed up to $32.75 million to support projects in partnership with the federal Broadband Canada: Connecting Rural Canadians program. The Building Broadband in Rural and Northern Ontario program will provide a co-investment of up to one-third of total eligible project costs.

This initiative promotes strategic investments in broadband infrastructure and encourages Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to address basic broadband gaps in rural and northern areas of the province. This will help communities pursue innovative approaches to promote economic development and improve access to public programs and services such as e-learning, e-health and e-government.

The Building Broadband in Rural and Northern Ontario program is delivered in partnership by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), the Ministry of Government Services (MGS), the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT)
and the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry (MNDMF).
