Applications for this program must be made in addition to applications made to the federal Broadband Canada: Connecting Rural Canadians program.

The steps for the application process for this program are as follows:

  1. Visit Industry Canada's Broadband Canada: Connecting Rural Canadians program website.
  2. Complete the federal application form for the Broadband Canada: Connecting Rural Canadians program.
  3. Submit your application and any required documentation for the Broadband Canada: Connecting Rural Canadians program to Industry Canada. Should you have any questions or require more information about this part of the application, please contact Industry Canada.
  4. Applicants wishing to apply for additional Ontario funding would then need to return to the Building Broadband in Rural and Northern Ontario website.
  5. Download and complete the Building Broadband in Rural and Northern Ontario application form found below.
  6. Submit required documentation to the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Applications for the Building Broadband in Rural and Northern Ontario program must include:

  1. one original signed completed federal program application;
  2. one original signed completed Building Broadband in Rural and Northern Ontario application;
  3. one electronic copy of both applications via email attachments or CD-ROM.

Completed application packages must be submitted to the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs by 4:00 pm (EST) on October 23, 2009 to be eligible for consideration.

Industry Canada, in collaboration with the province of Ontario, will determine approved projects based on identified program criteria. The Building Broadband in Rural and Northern Ontario program will provide additional funding, up to one-third of eligible costs, to those projects that demonstrate the ability to meet provincial priorities and objectives. The provincial criteria for Ontario's co-investment include:

  1. addressing hard to serve areas;
  2. providing economic development opportunities, and
  3. improving the capacity of Ontario's broadband networks.

Applicants are encouraged to include First Nation communities located in the vicinity of the priority areas. Funding from other applicable federal funding programs may be stacked to cover expenditures in aboriginal communities.
