SR9222 - The Evaluation and Development of a Plant Disease and Insect Warning System for Strawberry Growers in Ontario

This project was funded by OMAFRA through the 2009 New Directions & Alternative Renewable Fuels Research program.

Lead researcher

Dr. Ron Pitblado, Weather INnovations Incorporate

Objectives

  1. Assess the current botrytis and anthracnose disease models
  2. Evaluate existing powdery mildew disease models for strawberries
  3. Evaluate current tarnished plant bug data developing a degree day model to
    identify effective control periods
  4. Field evaluate these three models at 2 locations in Ontario and modify where
    appropriate
  5. Develop a website accessible to strawberry growers to assist in their pest
    management decisions

Expected benefits

Develop new grower tools to aid in the pest management decisions especially needed now as the industry moves towards the more insect and disease prone day neutral strawberry varieties.
