SR9091 - Minor Use Herbicide Registration for Vegetable Crops

The Ministry funded this project through the New Directions Research Program in 2001.

Lead researcher

Dr. John O'Sullivan, Dept. of Plant Agriculture, University of Guelph, Simcoe

Objectives

  1. To evaluate new herbicides including "reduced risk" herbicides for weed control in low acreage crops.
  2. To evaluate low-use rate, "reduced risk", environmentally-compatible herbicides for weed control efficacy and, where required, residue data in these crops to facilitate registration under the URMULE program.

Expected benefits

  1. Registration of these products for use in Ontario will ensure Ontario vegetable growers do not have an unfair advantage with growers elsewhere who compete with them.
  2. This project will also help to make available "reduced risk" and safer weed control products for growers of low acreage crops.
  3. The availability of "reduced risk", safer herbicides that are low-use rate, environmentally friendly and of low toxicity to humans will contribute to the overall reduction in pesticide use.

Results

Minor use registrations for products tested are in progress. Registration of these products will ensure that Ontario vegetable growers do not have an unfair advantage with growers elsewhere who compete with them. The availability of this new weed control technology will help growers of low acreage crops become more competitive. This project will also help to make available "reduced risk" and safer weed control products for growers of low acreage crops. Registration of "reduced risk", safer herbicides will help reduce pesticide impact on the environment. The availability of "reduced risk, safer herbicides that are low-use rate, environmentally friendly and of low toxicity to humans contributes to the overall reduction in pesticide use.
