SR9075 - Bio-Refineries in Ontario: An Investigation of the Potential for Corn-Based Biochemical Manufacturing Facilities in Ontario

The Ministry funded this project through the New Directions Research Program in 2001.

Lead researcher

Ken Hough, Ontario Corn Producers Association

Objectives

  1. To answer these questions: If we were to construct a biochemical manufacturing in Ontario:
    • on which biochemicals or groups of biochemicals could we feasibly concentrate
    • what would be the market for these biochemcials
    • what research or process technologies need to be further developed for each
    • what would be required in order to establish a bio-refinery to make this biochemical or group of biochemicals in Ontario
    • who would be logical partners
    • what would be required to attract these partners to invest in Ontario and
    • what are the constraints and logistic hurdles that need to be overcome.
  2. To explore other biochemicals that might be also manufactured by a bio-refinery using similar and/or attendant processes and technologies to produce related biochemicals or products.

Expected benefits

Bio-refineries envisioned by this study would be major industrial investments.

Results

Project Terminated.
