The Call for letters of intent (LOI) for the Food Safety Research Program is now closed. Only applicants who are successful at the letter of intent stage will be invited to submit a full proposal. The next call will likely be issued in the Spring 2012.

Application Process

Applicants to the Food Safety Research Program first submit a Letter of Intent, outlining their proposed research. Review committees evaluate the Letters of Intent and OMAFRA projects that most closely align with program priorities are invited to submit a full proposal. This invitation to submit a full proposal does not guarantee funding.

Full proposals are evaluated by both peer reviewers and review committees. Applicants whose full proposal is selected for funding will be notified in writing. Funding is then contingent on the applicant (or applicant's organization) signing an agreement with the Agricultural Research Institute of Ontario and on the applicant's compliance with all the terms and conditions in the agreement.

Who may apply

We invite universities, research institutes, industry, government agencies and private sector partners with demonstrated capacity to perform quality research to submit a Letter of Intent. Applicants outside the province of Ontario are eligible but must clearly indicate how their proposed research will benefit Ontario's food safety system. Researchers who have received funding from OMAFRA, but have failed to submit their required reports, are not eligible for funding under this program until OMAFRA has received and approved the outstanding reports.

Research Priorities for the 2011-12 Call

The Food Safety Research Program addresses the Ministry's Emergency Management Research Theme. There are five priority areas under this theme. Applicants' research should address at least one of the priority areas:

• Threat identification and prioritization
• Detection and surveillance
• Pathway analysis
• Prevention and control of disease
• Benefit/cost analysis
  

The research priorities are described more fully in Section Two of the 2011-2012 Food Safety Research Program Call for Letters of Intent. All applicants must clearly indicate how the proposed research will provide significant benefits to the food safety system in Ontario. Proposals may not be funded in all priority areas.

Although the 2011-12 Call for the Food Safety Research Program Call is now closed, researchers can still register and create a profile if they are interested in other OMAFRA research funding programs. We are expecting to issue a call for the New Directions Researcher Program sometime in July 2011.
