Education in Ontario

The Agricultural Diploma and Continuing Education programs offered by the University of Guelph and funded by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) are tremendously important to the success of the Ontario agri-food industry. More than 400 diploma graduates annually are readily employed in the widely diverse sectors of the industry, bringing the latest knowledge and skills to all aspects of the food system - from production and processing to financing and retailing.

Under a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with OMAFRA implemented April 1, 1997 and reaffirmed April 1, 2002, the University of Guelph delivers Agricultural Diploma and Certificate programs, as well as Continuing Education programs and the Veterinary Clinical Education Program at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC).

The Diploma Certificate and Continuing Education are offered at the regional colleges at Alfred, Kemptville, Ridgetown and the Ontario Agricultural College at the University of Guelph. Areas of study include: agriculture, horticulture, equine, food & nutrition, and veterinary technology. Shorter, certificate programs in these and additional topics are also available at the three regional colleges. Alfred College is the only francophone agricultural college in Ontario. It also offers home study programs in the french language.

The Veterinary Clinical Education Program is managed by the Ontario Veterinary College under a separate MOA (1991). OMAFRA provides annual base funding to the College to meet the continuing need for veterinary graduates with a high level of clinical experience, and to provide for an animal referral hospital to service veterinarians and animal owners in Ontario.
