Fresh City Farms

Ran Goel, MPP Arthur Potts, Hannah Hunter and Chen Goel

Fresh City Farms makes it easy for urban locavores to find fresh, local produce. The company grows an abundance of produce on six acres of land in the heart of Toronto. It then delivers the harvest either directly to consumers or to convenient pick-up spots. To expand urban agriculture, it also runs a beginner program to help would-be producers learn the ropes. Just four years after its launch, the for-profit enterprise brings in $1.2 million in annual sales, employs more than a dozen people and provides 1,400 Toronto households with local and organic produce. The direct-to-consumer delivery uses a quarter of the fuel of a typical trip to the grocery store. On top of that, the local focus ensures every dollar earned creates $2.84 in economic spinoffs.
