The Mustard Seed Co-operative Grocery
MPP Arthur Potts and Graham Cubitt
At Hamilton's Mustard Seed Co-op, local rules. Look at the labels on the grocery shelves and you'll see more than just the price. You'll also see the distance each product has travelled from source to store. More than 60 per cent of the products carried by the consumer co-operative are locally produced. Moreover, it offers an extensive selection of organic, fair trade, vegan, gluten-free and kosher items. Those are all things that resonate with customers. Since opening in January 2014, Mustard Seed has attracted 1,400 members, while sales are on track to exceed its 2014 target of $1.4 million. For consumers, the store offers convenient access to local food in downtown Hamilton. For local farmers and processors it's an important new market that just keeps growing.
