Peek inside Randy Lambrecht's two 300-foot greenhouses and you'll find trays stretching as far as the eye can see. Filling those trays with dirt by hand used to be a labour-intensive chore that took all day. So Lambrecht sat down with a pen and paper and after a lot of design iterations and plenty of testing, his semi-automated dirt filler was born. Powered by a reduced-gear motor, the hopper-fed conveyor-belt system can fill 800 to 1,000 trays an hour and is easily adjusted to fill different tray sizes. The filler offers a welcome alternative to the bulky and expensive commercial models currently on the market. For Lambrecht, it's meant less labour, better seedlings and the ability to accept more orders in a shorter time span.
