Great North Hydroponics

MPP Kathryn McGarry, Kimberley Kroslak and Mackenzie Higgins

At Great Northern Hydroponics, some members of the team don't eat or sleep. This Essex County tomato producer relies on robots to move carts around its 65 acres of greenhouses. Induction wires and radio frequency identification tags beneath the floors direct robots around the facilities. Ready to harvest? Attach a train of empty carts to the robots, punch in a preconfigured route and send them off to the picking area. Once the carts are full, reattach them to the robots and direct them to the packaging warehouse. Because each cart is also scanned at the point of harvest, the system automatically logs where and when the tomatoes were picked. For this company, going high tech has delivered greater efficiency, real-time data and superior product traceability.
