Carther Plants

MPP Kathryn McGarry and Sandra Carther

In the not-too-distant future, you could be slicing fresh local strawberries onto your breakfast cereal all year round, thanks to Carther Plants. The Thamesville nursery has developed top-quality soilless strawberry plug plants perfect for greenhouse production. The day-neutral cultivars can be grown throughout the year. Meanwhile, the hydroponic culture lowers the risk of disease and nematodes. Sandra Carther set out to develop the plugs in 2009 and has been improving the process ever since. A time-controlled mist system ensures 95 per cent rooting success, and screened greenhouses keep out pests. On top of that, a European-style gutter system maximizes production capacity and labour efficiency. Carther's plugs now set the stage for a whole new industry: fresh, Ontario-grown strawberries, even in the depths of winter.
