If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. When their first crop of strawberries failed because of weeds and a season that was too short, the owners of Pike Lake Farms weren't discouraged. Using raised beds, drip tape irrigation and plastic mulch, they found that they could harvest healthy strawberries at almost the same time as southern Ontario farms, a full three weeks ahead of their northern competitors. The system worked so well that they've expanded to vegetable crops and opened an on-farm store where they also sell their maple syrup and beef from their Black Angus herd.
