A new way of getting good, practical crop production information to farmers in Northeastern Ontario is credited with improving yields, saving time and money, and better protecting the environment. Since 2009, a caravan tour of crop specialists from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the industry has spent five consecutive days each year meeting with farmers to share best practices, transfer the latest technology and discuss cropping issues. As a result of the 'caravan' approach of moving around to different farms, the participants get the kind of real-life experience that classroom workshops and presentations at annual meetings can't deliver. Other commodity groups in the north are taking note, and looking into doing the same kind of outreach.
