A combination of old genes and new techniques makes for a profitable farm that teaches city kids about agriculture in eastern Ontario. The Harleys have made the most of carefully rotating livestock and crops for an energy efficient, environmentally sustainable mixed operation on 1450 acres. Rotating multi-species in a grazing system is innovative and reduces parasites. Raising hearty, heritage livestock like Belted Galloway cattle, Wiltshire Horn sheep and Tamworth pigs means that most of the operation is run outdoors. The farmers work with Trent University to use DNA to trace the animals from birth to plate. They have also worked with the Toronto Zoo, Riverdale Farm and others to host children's educational tours.
