L.M. Bolle & Sons has been serving the Canadian market with world-class, gladioli cut flowers and bulbs for more than forty years. After harvest, they store the flower bulbs in bins over the winter months. Air circulation in the bins is critical to retaining dry, healthy bulbs, but came with the large cost of running fans on more than 300 bins for hours on end. The growers found a new, more energy-efficient way to protect the bulbs. They installed compartments in the bins, which allow for better air circulation around the gladioli bulbs, and a computerized timer helps fan air through the compartments. This has reduced fan running time from 14 hours to 60 minutes per fan. The system can make other producers "glad" as it can be adapted for use in other crops such as potatoes, onions and turnips.
