The Mite-Away treatment developed by NOD Apiary Products is an outstanding example of how innovation that starts on the farm can help the Ontario agri-food industry meet the challenges of profitability and sustainability and achieve tremendous success within a global context.

NOD Apiary Products was started a decade ago by beekeepers concerned about the declining efficacy of the products that were available to control both varroa and tracheal mites in honeybees, two pests that have resisted eradication, and that can quickly weaken or destroy entire bee colonies. Working in partnership with the Ontario Beekeepers Association Tech Transfer program, they developed the Mite-Away Formic Acid Pad.

They're very easy to apply and they kill both mites that we're concerned about - the tracheal mite that lives inside of the bee and the varroa mite which lives on the outside of the bee.

And the Mite-Away Pads offer advantages over other treatments that can contaminate beehives with dangerous chemicals that can affect the viability of the queen and the hive, or that require special safety equipment for beekeeper.

The Mite-AwayII - it was designed for safety. It's a unique design that allows the beekeeper to treat their hives with little risk to themselves and with formic acid there's no residues left in the honey or in the comb.

Mite-Away treatments, applied twice a year during identified treatment windows, effectively control mites by preventing their numbers from growing to dangerous levels.

Besides being adopted by beekeepers from coast to coast across Canada, Mite Away products have received full registration for use in the United States, and NOD Apiary Products USA now has warehouses located in Port Huron, Michigan, Hanover, Pennsylvania, and Reno, Nevada.

And so today, the Premier's Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence celebrates the innovation of NOD Apiary Products of Frankford, Ontario.
