Take a Fresh Look at Ontario
The egg arrives before the chicken at one of Ontario's finest agriculture
and food research facilities.
At the University of Guelph, researchers explore new horizons in the
heart of agricultural and environmental innovation.
Poultry fed flax and fish oils produce meat rich in Omega-3, a heart-
healthy discovery, and one of the many positive results that come from
the university's longtime partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture,
Food and Rural Affairs.
It's a partnership that makes a difference to the agri-food and consumer
community!
Ontario grows great food and our people grow great ideas. Investment
in cutting-edge research leads to innovative uses for forestry, cooking
and agricultural byproducts that meet society's changing needs.
Imagine every car in the province dressed with a 'biodegradeable' interior,
including dashboard, seats, head rests, door panels all the result of
agriculture-led innovation.
Or buses fuelled by ethanol blends - already piloted and now in use in
Toronto and Sudbury.
Amazing, innovative research positions people who work, live and raise
their families at the frontier of progress.
The heartbeat of Toronto's innovation is rhythmic in the "Discovery
District". At this centre of innovation, ideas are fostered. Researchers
develop archetypes that lead to medical and technological breakthroughs.
Discoveries extend from the lab to lead the way in marketplace creativity.
MaRS Landing in Guelph links the Discovery District with commercialization.
Icewine is a treat preserved against all odds and one of the most spectacular
crops in the Niagara area.
Explore a province that sets a standard for applied research - "Take
a Fresh Look at Ontario!"
Niagara College's Winery and Viticulture Technician's program hosts Canada's
first and only commercial teaching winery, including three onsite vineyards
in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Field-fresh to fork-full is high-tech business in Ontario.
Food processing represents one of Ontario's key industries and it moves
forward at a steady pace. The province is an attractive host for processing
companies and contains Canada's major food industry cluster.
More than half of national food processing companies - both large and
agri-preneurial - generate over 120-thousand processing-related jobs and
more than 32-billion-dollars in annual sales for Ontario.
Ontario's farmers help build a world-class agri-food sector. The Premier's
Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence recognizes hard work and investment
in innovative ideas.
Farm-level innovation enhances profitability in the marketplace, meets
evolving consumer demands and manages the effects of farming on the environment.
Fritz and Paul Klaesi use their award winning innovation to generate
renewable energy from manure. An engineer and a dairy farmer, they are
early adopters of the technology behind this anaerobic digester.
They now feed enough energy to the hydro grid to power their farm and
50 others homes each month.
The Niagara Greenhouse industry burgeons with 14-million-square-feet
under glass and is the largest horticulture sector in Canada.
Horticulture research happens at the Vineland Research and Innovation
Centre. Partnerships ensure ongoing emergence of a competitive industry
in one of the country's most unique geographic regions.
New ventures will accelerate through this connection between research
and collaboration.
Leona Dombrowsky, Minister - Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs,
Ontario
