Animal Health Strategy for Ontario

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) is leading the development of an animal health strategy for Ontario to enhance the competitiveness of the agri-food industry and further safeguard the province against the potentially negative health and economic impacts of animal health issues.

In fall of 2006 we consulted with stakeholders to ensure the strategy addresses appropriate issues and proposes the most effective means of implementation.

The feedback received during the consultation will help shape an animal health strategy that will enhance Ontario's ability to prevent, detect and respond to a broad range of animal health issues.

We have reviewed the comments received during the consultations and we are committed to developing an animal health strategy. We will continue to work with stakeholders and keep the public informed of progress on this initiative.

The comments received from stakeholders during the consultation were fairly consistent and supportive.

Comments included:

  • There is a need for a single co-ordinating body for animal health issues and initiatives;
  • General support for enhanced legislative authority to address animal health issues was demonstrated;
  • Stakeholders, in particular agricultural producers and their organizations, want to have input in an advisory capacity at all levels of development of animal health initiatives under the strategy;
  • To improve Ontario's ability to address animal health issues, resources are required in the areas of biosecurity, prevention, education and awareness;
  • Further support is needed from both government and industry stakeholders as they work together on key elements of the animal health system including farm animal veterinary services, diagnostic services, surveillance and monitoring systems, and communications networks as part of an early warning system;
  • There is a need for strong linkages between the animal and human health communities; and,
  • Provincial animal health measures should complement, not duplicate, federal measures.
