Sheep Flock Improvement Program
Top Animal Reports Explanation

The Top Animal Report is a listing of animals with above average genetic evaluation data. This list only includes animals from producers who have signed the Freedom of Information release.

The Top Animal Report is currently available for the three main breeds tested on the Sheep Flock Improvement Program. These breeds are Dorset-Polled, Rideau and Suffolk. Each report is listed by Maternal Index and Growth Index. Animals with realtime ultrasound data for fat and muscle depth also have Terminal Indexes listed.

The Maternal Index is designed to increase the number of lambs born and weaned as well as increasing growth rate and minimizing the increase in birth weight. The Growth Index is designed to increase growth rate and minimize the increase in birth weight. The Terminal Index is designed to increase muscle, reduce fat and increase growth rate while minimizing the increase in birth weight. This index is only reported for those producers taking realtime ultrasound fat depth and muscle depth measurements. For each breed there are three reports as follows:

Top Ram Report

The Top Ram Report lists all animals that have an index greater than zero who have completed test and have had at least one progeny tested in the past 3 years, or have a 50 day weight and at least 10 progeny with 50 day weights, or have no weights of their own but have at least 20 progeny with 50 day weights.

Top Ewe Report

The Top Ewe Report lists the top 100 ewes that have an index greater than zero with at least one progeny tested in the past 3 years. Ewes without their own completed performance test must have a minimum of 5 progeny tested to be included on the list.

Top Lamb Report

The Top Lamb Report lists the top 100 lambs born in the previous 16 months that have completed their test and are not disposed.
