The
overall dimensions are; length 8 feet, width 3 feet and the plywood
floor is 25 inches above the ground. These dimensions can be varied
depending on breed and height. Position the feeder perpendicular to
an outside paddock fence so that the square bales can be thrown in
from outside the paddock. By placing it perpendicular to the fence,
the horse group is divided in half. The most aggressive horse will
be on one side with the other(s) on the end and the opposite side.
Feeders
can be placed end to end; however, the last one should have a closed
end. An eight foot feeder will accommodate 1 - 1 1/2 square bales of
hay or 3 horses easily.
Horses may chew the wood. Therefore, use pressure treated lumber
on at least part numbers 2, 7 and 9. Do not use creosoted lumber on
areas where food could become contaminated.
The dimensions are nominal and can be changed to meet your needs.
