Plastic barrels can easily be converted to safe, inexpensive, feeders for horses. Plastic barrels, which have contained food products, are readily available and come in a variety of colours and sizes. Blue, straight-sided, barrels have stood up to eight years of intensive outdoor use with no ultraviolet degradation.

  1. Choose a straight-sided barrel ensuring that the plugs for the openings are in place. Do not use barrels where the entire end is detachable.
  2. Using a tape measure and marker, draw a horizontal line 10 inches from the bottom around half of the barrel.
  3. Do the same, measuring down from the top, starting on the opposite side.
  4. Join the two horizontal lines with vertical lines creating two "L" shaped halves.
  5. Cut along the line with a jig saw. Corners can be rounded out while cutting or later.
  6. You should now have two "L" shaped pieces.
  7. Rasp or grind smooth any rough or sharp areas.
  8. Drill 1/8 inch holes in the bottom around the perimeter to allow for moisture to drain.
  9. Drill four holes in the back wall of the feeders and attach to a fence post and adjacent fence boards using 4 - 2" long lag bolts and large penny washers.
  10. The bottom of the feeder should be mounted to the fence at chest height of the horses being fed.
  11. For best results, feeders should be placed at least ten (10) feet apart.
