In 2004, significant progress was made in the transmission and storage of raw goat milk quality data from Lab Services Division (LSD) to OMAFRA via a new data management system. This system is currently being used to transmit and house test results from a range of food product samples including meat, fish, produce, processed dairy products and goat milk.

Prior to 2004, all test results for a particular sample were reported to OMAFRA by LSD via Excel spreadsheets. Now with the new system, test results are continually transmitted at 15-minute intervals throughout the business day, meaning quicker turnaround. The key benefit for OMAFRA Staff however, is the ability to track and monitor quality histories. Using custom designed reports, the Raw Milk Specialists can now quickly and easily analyze data to detect and assist in troubleshooting of milk quality problems.

In addition to monthly regulatory test results, OMAFRA is now receiving data from samples tested by the various marketing groups. Thanks to the open communication and co-operation of industry representatives, data sharing has more than doubled the amount of raw goat milk quality data available to OMAFRA Staff. Meanwhile, marketers of goat milk also continue to benefit by receiving electronic transmissions of monthly regulatory test results in addition to their normal testing needs.
