Canadian Food Inspection Agency Approved Disinfecting Agents

The following disinfecting agents have been recommended by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for use in the control of Foot and Mouth Disease.

Citric Acid:

  • 28.5 grams/13.5 litre (1 oz/3 gallons) to make 1.2% solution, make fresh
  • suitable for personal and protective clothing disinfecting, personal disinfecting
  • use in power sprayers or steam cleaners
  • combine with non-ionic or cationic detergent for general cleaning
  • non-corrosive: safe to use on paint, metal, wood, skin, concrete textiles
  • do not use with soaps, alkalis, washing soda, ionic detergents or alkaline water softeners
  • contact time is 30 minutes

Acetic Acid (2%):

  • mix vinegar 50:50 with water, or dilute glacial acetic acid (99.5%) to 2%
  • mildly corrosive for metal objects
  • may leave slight stickiness on rubber objects unless rinsed well with water
  • poor penetration: surface being disinfected must be relatively impervious & free of organic debris
  • contact time is 30 minutes

Sulphamic Acid:

  • mix 28.5 grams/13.5 litre (1 oz/3 gallons)
  • safe for metals, paints, rubber and plastic if rinsed after 5 minutes

Virkon® (potassium monopersulfate 21.4%):

  • mix 20 grams/litre of water
  • oxidizing agent: excellent disinfectant, active against all virus families
  • contact time of 10 minutes

GermKill® (and other acidic iodophors):

  • mix to 1:100-200 dilution
  • for use on buildings, equipment, vehicles, animal pens
  • corrosive: may require rinsing
  • contact time 20 minutes

Disinfectants only work on surfaces that are clean and free of soil or organic debris.
