The following are questions and answers from an interactive process conducted as part of the South Western Ontario Dairy Symposium held February 21, 2008. PowerPoint presentation pdf (518kb)

Question 1: Are you an Ontario dairy producer?

Answer 1: 91% said yes; 9% said no

Question 2: The February Quota Price was $29501/Kg. If you could change it, would you make it:

Answer 2: 48% said lower; 52% said leave it alone

Question 3: How old or young are you?

Answer 3: 25% were under 30; 10% were between 30-34;

Question 4: How many Kilograms of quota does your farm have?

Answer 4: 5%-less than 30kg; 21%-30-40.9kg; 22%-50-69.9%; 12%-70-89.9%; 18%-90-119.9kg; 8%-120-149.9kg; 7%-150-199.9kg; 7%-200 or more

Question 5: Five Years from now, how big do you expect your dairy farm to be?

Answer 5: 24% said about the same as now; 57% said 10% to 50% more cows; 15% said more than 50% more cows; 1% said less cows now, but still milking; 3% said I will quit milking within 5 years

Question 6: Thornloe, Pine River and a number of other cheese companies we have featured make their cheeses from Canadian milk only. Do you buy:

Answer 6: 19% said Only all Canadian Cheese; 56% said Usually try to buy Canadian; 25% said Buy mainstream cheese that is easy to find and the best value

Over the years we have featured several all-Canadian ice cream brands on the program here? Is the ice-cream in your freezer:

Answer 7: 13%-Always all-Canadian; 43%-Try to buy Canadian most of the time; 25%-We buy the best tasting regardless of ingredients; 19%-We buy the best value or cheapest

Question 8: What is your current estimated purchased feed cost per litre of milk (include milking and dry cows)

Answer 8: 3%- less than 3 cents, 10%-3-4.9 cents, 20%-5-6.9 cents, 18%-7-8.9 cents, 8%-9-10.9 cents, 13%-11-12.9 cents, 9%-greater than 13 cents, 19%-don't know

Question 9: What is your current estimated total feed cost per litre of milk (include milking and dry cows)?

Answer 9: 1%-less than 9 cents, 3%-9-11.9 cents, 26%-12-14.9 cents, 15%-15-17.9 cents, 18%-18-20.9 cents, 5%-21-23.9 cents, 5%- greater than 24 cents, 27%-Don't know

Question 10: What is your current estimated total cost per litre of milk (include all expenses except unpaid family labour and debt servicing) ?

Answer 10: 7%-less than 30 cents; 23%-30-35.9 cents;15%-36-41.9 cents; 13%-42-47.9 cents; 4%-48-53.9 cents; 1%-54-59.9 cents; 0%-greater than 60 cents, 37%-don't know

Question 11: What would your estimated cost per litre be to produce 1 more litre of milk than you do now (include all expenses except unpaid family labour and debt servicing)?

Answer 11: 41%-, 13%-, 14%-, 7%-, 2%-, 0%-48-53.9 cents, 0%-greater than 60 cents, 22%- don't know

Question 12: Do you support pricing Canadian skim milk powder at world prices?

Answer 12: 92% said yes, 8 percent said No

Question 13: If blending in IREP or ice cream ingredient milk can lower price and expand quota, would you support?

Answer 13: 48%-5.2% more quota and $2./HI less, 31%-2.6% more quota and $1./HI less, 12%-1.3% more quota and $.50/HI less, 6%-No change from current policy, 4%-I want a higher price and less market

Question 14: If world prices go down and the blend price has to go down to keep the new market, how far should the blend price be allowed to go down before we stop supplying the affected classes?

Answer 14: 5%-No further, 9%-up to $0.25/HI, 8%-up to 40.50/HI, 18%-up to $1.00/HI, 29%-up to $2.00/HI, 16%-up to $5.00/HI, 15%-whatever it takes

Question 15: Hypothetically, would you go farther? Would you support:

Answer 15: 39%-won't support more extreme change, 44% would support 10% more quota and $5.00/HI less, 9% would support 20% more quota and $12.00/HI less, 9%-unlimited market access and a market driven blend price (abandon supply management)

Question 16: Would you support additional producer investment in promotion/market expansion for high value dairy products?

Answer 16: 14%-No, 36%-yes up to $0.10/HI, 27%-yes up to $0.20/HI, 22%-yes up to $0.50/HI

Question 17: Should processors be represented on national decision making bodies such as the CMSMC market committee and P5 Supervisory Body?

Answer 17: 77% saidYes, 23% said No

Question 18: Should national decision making mechanisms operate on:

Answer 18: 8%-consensus of all provincial boards, as is the case now, 58%-voted support by a majority of provinces with at least 70% of the population, 34%-abolish provincial boards and elect one national body
