We've all heard and read the info on value-added calves and sales, and wondered how we can fit our calves into it. This fall could be your opportunity to try it yourself. Many fall sales offer a Value-Added sale or section.

If you think you might like to consider it, these are the basics.

Each sale may have slight variations so check early with the ones you want to work with.

  • The calves will be castrated -- guaranteed
  • The calves will be dehorned -- guaranteed
  • The calves will be vaccinated and boostered -- if a killed vaccine is used -- with
at least a 4 way. Plus HS (Haemophilus Sommnus) (this is to deal with shipping fever)
  • The calves will be tagged -- for ID and trace back
  • Other work should be recorded and announced (implants, bunk broke, parasite treatment)

Because this program is good for the industry, good for our image with the consumer, and ultimately good for your business.
