Temperature Preference of RabbitsResearchers in Stuttgart Germany, tested weaned rabbits to determine their preference for lower temperatures. There has been little research done on the reaction of weaned rabbits to lower temperatures. Generally, the recommended ambient temperature for weaned rabbits is 20°C (68°F). However, producers know rabbits are relatively resistant to cold temperatures. The first experiment tested rabbits from 28 days of age (weaned) up to slaughter age. Rabbits were free to choose between three compartments with solid floors, where the temperature was 15, 20 or 25° C (59, 68 or 77° F). The rabbits clearly preferred the lowest temperature right from the beginning of the test. They preferred to be active and to rest in the coldest temperature compartment. This tendency increased with age. The rabbits were fed at similar levels in all temperature ranges. A second experiment tested fryers for their preference between two
low temperatures. Rabbits had a choice between climate compartments
of 10 or 15° C (50 or 59° F). Generally the weaned rabbits
preferred the lower temperature when they were active but preferred
the higher temperature while resting. For more information: Toll Free: 1-877-424-1300 Local: (519) 826-4047 E-mail: ag.info.omafra@ontario.ca
