11.1 Attention MDS Software Users

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) has developed this computer program for distribution and use with the Minimum Distance Separation (MDS) formulae as a public service to assist municipalities, farmers, consultants and the general public.  This version of the software distributed by OMAFRA will be considered to be the official version for purposes of calculating MDS.  OMAFRA is not responsible for errors due to inaccurate or incorrect data or information; mistakes in calculation or software use; errors arising out of modification of the software; or errors arising out of incorrect inputting of data.  All data and calculations should be verified before acting on them.

11.2 System Requirements

MDS is designed for Windows 2000 and XP operating systems. The fully installed program will occupy approximately 40 megabytes of hard disk space. The optimum screen resolution for MDS is 800 x 600 pixels or higher. It is not recommended that MDS software be run with screen resolutions smaller than 800 x 600. Your computer must be set to use a period as the decimal symbol (e.g., 1.0 not 1,0). This is not a concern for Windows users operating with English (Canada) or English (United States) settings. Other users can change the decimal symbol in the Regional Options selection in Windows Control Panel.

11.3 Program Installation

As with all software installations, it is strongly advised that all other programs be closed before beginning installation. The user can install MDS on their computer with the CD provided by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA). Insert the CD into the computer. On most computers, the MDS Installer will automatically start up. If the installer does not automatically start up, click Start (bottom left hand corner of Desktop screen), click Settings, click Control Panel, open Add/Remove Programs, click either Install or Add New Programs, and select the setup.bat file from the CD. Follow the instructions, and on-screen prompts. A message is displayed when the setup program is complete.  You may be required to restart your computer.  Note: The installation process may take several minutes.

11.4 French/English Translation

The software can be run in either English or French as needed by the user. The language option is located under the tools menu, and allows the user to establish the default language. However functions that are controlled through Windows operating systems, such as the 'save changes before exiting' pop up window and the 'taskbar', will appear in the default language of the Windows operating system. In order for these elements to appear in the same language as the balance of the software both the default language for the MDS software and the windows operating system should be set to the same language.

11.5 Updates to Software

It is recommended that users check on the OMAFRA website from time to time for updates to the MDS software. Owners of an existing copy of the software will be able to download and install updates/upgrades as they become available from OMAFRA over time.Use the search feature on the OMAFRA website to locate updates and additional information, on MDS and other land use planning related subjects.
