Newsroom Story IdeasBuilding Physically Active Communities One Brick at a Time“We are very excited about the development of this multi-purpose recreation complex. It will be a place that everyone can enjoy and I know that our residents are eager to see its completion, including the recreational hill.” Ontario is witnessing a significant decline in physical activity amongst the population and for the first time in a generation we are seeing a growing number of obese teens and adults. That’s why investments in recreation facilities is so important for Ontario communities. Recently, the Town of Georgina took advantage of a beautiful snowy day to break ground on a new multi-season recreation campus which will open sometime in 2011. This project is one of 60 recreation projects being funded through the Building Canada Fund – Communities Component. Investing in recreation will increase the number of sport and recreational facilities across Ontario and help support healthy and active lifestyles for all Ontarians. The Georgina new recreation campus will see the creation of an outdoor centralized park complex that will support a full range of recreational activities for every season. A cycle park and trails, natural sports fields, playgrounds and splash pads will provide hours of summertime enjoyment, while toboggan and tubing hills and a chalet with concessions and restrooms will keep families busy throughout the winter months. The upcoming construction season will be busy and full of building projects across Ontario. This is one of more than 470 projects across Ontario that is moving forward thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $1 billion under the Building Canada Fund. During these challenging economic times, the governments of Canada and Ontario have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and funding into targeted infrastructure projects across the province.
