Ontario Helps Set Local Table

NEWS

November 27, 2009

Ontario is spurring rural economies and local food sales by supporting marketing projects across the province.

To promote the local foods that fuel the people, communities and economies of rural Ontario, the province is investing in eight new projects through the Ontario Market Investment Fund. Some of these projects are:

  • Working with local public health units to get consumers to buy and eat more local food in Thunder Bay
  • Sourcing and showcasing local food for community cooking classes in Peterborough
  • Encouraging urban gardens to grow produce for sale in Guelph

The four-year program has invested close to $4.3 million in 89 projects to date.  The program helps develop economic opportunities through trade events, marketing campaigns and industry research initiatives that foster partnerships and collaboration to promote Ontario foods. It is part of Ontario’s investment in ‘buy local’ initiatives.
