New Agricultural Framework To Focus On Bio-Products

July 17, 2008

NEWS

Ontario is helping Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry County develop an Ag-industrial Development framework, which will link consumers, processors and the research community.

The McGuinty government's $896,815 investment towards the framework will help the partners focus on manufacturing and processing bio-products and bio-product driven agriculture in areas such as bio-energy, bio-chemicals and functional foods. This project will help lead to new manufacturing and processing opportunities, new farm income and renewable lower cost energy.

The funding is part of the Rural Economic Development Program which invests in community-based projects in three priority areas:

  • Revitalized communities and downtowns
  • Enhanced skills training
  • Improved access to health care services.

QUOTES

"Through this project, we hope to increase Ontario's annual specialty food exports by $32 million and bio-fuel product exports by $2 million," said Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MPP Jim Brownell. "The framework not only significantly impacts this county, but Ontario as a whole."

"It is expected that 20-50 permanent positions will be created through this project," said Estella Rose, Warden for the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry. "With this funding we will be able to facilitate new agricultural and manufacturing infrastructure to capture new opportunities through bio-products."
