ONTARIO BOOSTS GREEN COMMUNITY INITIATIVE

McGuinty Government Supports Environmental Partnership in Stone Mills

NEWS April 17, 2008

Ontario is helping the Township of Stone Mills become greener and more environmentally conscious.

The province is investing $19,700 to help the township develop a detailed work plan for green initiatives and address community concerns about climate change, energy and water consumption and air pollution.

This initiative will encourage partnerships between businesses and the community and engage families about the need for energy conservation and the preservation of green spaces in the Tamworth/Erinsville area. Achieving this goal would not only be positive for local residents but would attract more visitors to the area, increase economic activity and develop green industry.

The funding is part of the Rural Economic Development Program which invests in community-based projects in three priority areas:

  • Improved access to health care services
  • Revitalized communities and downtowns
  • Enhanced skills training.

QUOTES

"Stone Mills is to be commended on its plan to build a greener and more sustainable community for Ontario families. This is the kind of initiative that our government is pleased to support," said Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Minister Leona Dombrowsky.

"Making our township a leading green community in Ontario will not only be positive for our residents, but will serve as a benchmark for other communities to achieve in the future," said Reeve Debbie Thompson.
