MCGUINTY GOVERNMENT HELPS REVITALIZE QUINTE WEST

Strengthening Community Development Through Downtown Revitalization

QUINTE WEST - The McGuinty government is investing in a community revitalization project to encourage economic growth and development in the City of Quinte West, Lou Rinaldi, MPP for Northumberland announced today on behalf of Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

"I am pleased to support this project to help the community grow and prosper," said Rinaldi. "Revitalizing the town and then strategically promoting it to others will help attract jobs, businesses and tourists to the area."

The province will contribute $184,800 to help the Corporation of the City of Quinte West and its partners, the Trenval Business Development Corporation, and the Trenton Downtown Business Improvement Association, fulfill their revitalization goals.

"Thanks to the support of the provincial government, we can proceed with implementing our vision," said John Williams, mayor for the City of Quinte West. "Building renewal and a gateway to the City, in combination with strategic marketing plans and promotional materials for both the industrial park and downtown areas, will help to ensure a positive public perception of our community."

This is yet another example of how, working together, Ontarians have achieved results in rural Ontario. Other examples include:

  • Providing an additional $70 million for the Rural Infrastructure Investment Initiative. This means a total of $140 million will be available for improvements to water systems, roads, bridges and other priorities
  • Providing $472 million in 2007 to rural municipalities through the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund
  • Investing $10 million to help expand broadband coverage to the most ready rural and remote communities in southern Ontario.

Today's investment was made through the Rural Economic Development (RED) Program, which invests in community-based projects that support sustainable rural economies in three priority areas: improved access to health care services, revitalized communities and downtowns, and enhanced skills training.

Through the RED Program, the province has invested $45.1 million in 139 projects, representing a total investment of $477.4 million in rural Ontario since 2003. The Ontario government and its partners are building strong rural communities that work better for the people who live in them.
