Tourism Development Study Bolsters Durham Region Economy

McGuinty Government Invests In Township Of Scugog

Port Perry - The McGuinty government is investing in a tourism feasibility study that will help expand the local economy in Scugog, Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs, announced today.

"Tourism is a vital part of Scugog's economy," said Dombrowsky. "The McGuinty government is proud to help the community further strengthen this sector and explore options for future development."

The government will contribute $23,100 to help the township undertake a tourism feasibility study to capitalize on the overnight tourism market. A consultant will investigate the feasibility of attracting hotel accommodation to the municipality and compile marketing information. A marketing contractor will develop tools and resources for investment attraction.

"We are pleased with the support of the provincial government on this project," said Mayor Marilyn Pearce. "The Township of Scugog is the gateway to the northern, more rural areas of Durham Region and hotel accommodation would greatly enhance economic opportunities for the townships of Brock, Uxbridge and Scugog. This study will help us demonstrate the value of the Township of Scugog's tourism industry to potential investors and has the potential to provide new accommodations to our valued tourists."

Other government initiatives that support a strong rural economy include:

  • Investing $520 million in the Ontario Ethanol Growth Fund to expand ethanol production in Ontario

  • Reducing the pressure on property taxes by picking up more of the tab for land ambulance and public health

  • Investing more than $26 million in rural communities through the Rural Economic Development (RED) Program.

Today's investment was made through the RED program which invests in projects that support sustainable rural economies and community partnerships - a key part of the government's plan for rural Ontario.

Through the RED program, the Ontario government and its rural partners are building stronger communities that work better for the people who live in them.
