Minister Dombrowsky Seeks Urgent Meeting
With Federal Counterpart
McGuinty Government To Participate In New Funding,
Once Details Are Provided
TORONTO - Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Leona
Dombrowsky called today for a meeting with her federal counterpart, Minister
Chuck Strahl, to discuss the details of federal funding for agriculture
announced in this week's budget.
"I appreciate that the federal government has recognized the challenges
facing Ontario's farmers. The government of Ontario wants to participate
in this new funding, and we need to learn the specifics as quickly as
possible," said Dombrowsky. "We need to ensure that Ontario's
farmers receive their fair share of this funding, and that it is delivered
in a way that meets their needs."
"Ontario farmers need support in the short-term and the long-term
to strengthen the foundation of their industry," said Premier Dalton
McGuinty. "Our producers must receive their fair share of the $1.5
billion announced by the federal finance minister for this year."
The McGuinty government's commitment to farmers is part of its plan to
build stronger rural communities, including:
- $125 million in assistance for Ontario farmers, delivered in time
for the 2006 spring planting season
- OMAFRA's base budget increased by $17 million this year, bringing
the total base increase to $220 million since 2003-2004
- $50 million for the tobacco industry
- $230 million for rural schools, funding repairs, library books and
transition programs
- More than $19 million through the Rural Economic Development Program
- 30 -
