Ontario Government Supports Tourism Revitalization In
Caledon
Invests In Alton Mill Arts-Heritage Preservation Project
CALEDON - The Ontario government is supporting tourism revitalization
in Caledon by investing in the Alton Mill arts-heritage preservation project,
Liz Sandals, MPP for Guelph-Wellington, announced today on behalf of Minister
of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Leona Dombrowsky.
"Ontario's success depends on building strong communities, a strong
economy and a healthy environment in rural Ontario," said Sandals.
"Today's announcement supports our plan to ensure our rural communities
like Caledon offer more opportunities for their residents, and provide
our citizens with a higher quality of life."
The government will contribute $774,400 to Alton Mill Development Inc.
and its partner, Headwaters Arts Festival. The project will include converting
the interior of the building into art studios, gallery, and heritage exhibit;
and rehabilitating the mill pond and dam into an environmentally-friendly
recreation area and market.
"The Alton Mill is rooted in Caledon's history," said Town
of Caledon Mayor Marolyn Morrison. "This contribution from the Ontario
government will help preserve and protect Caledon's built heritage, while
supporting our growing arts community."
"The Alton Mill is a significant historic property with immense
potential," said Jeremy Grant, vice-president, planning and development
group, Alton Mill Development Inc. "We welcome the support of the
Ontario government and look forward to moving ahead on this project."
Today's investment was made through the Rural Economic Development (RED)
program, which invests in projects that support sustainable rural economies
and community partnerships, and is a key part of the government's plan
for rural Ontario. The rural plan provides a coordinated framework across
government to build on rural Ontario's strengths - committed people, diverse
economic opportunities, unrivalled resources and a solid sense of community.
