Ontario Government Supports Community Revitalization
Project Will Lead To Economic Diversification Plan
QUEEN'S PARK - The Ontario government is supporting community
revitalization in Sault Ste. Marie by investing in a project that will
help diversify the local economy, David Orazietti, MPP for Sault Ste.
Marie announced today on behalf of Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of Agriculture,
Food and Rural Affairs.
"The strength of Ontario depends on the strength of our communities,"
said Orazietti. "Today's announcement supports the McGuinty government's
commitment to provide the right tools that enable communities like Sault
Ste. Marie to prosper."
The Ontario government will contribute $28,538 to Algoma University College
and its partners, Ontario Métis Aboriginal Association and Sault
Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation. The project will conduct
a social and economic assessment of Sault Ste. Marie that will help the
community to develop and implement an economic diversification plan.
"The Sault Ste. Marie community is pleased that the government has
chosen to support this project," said Dr. Linda Savory-Gordon, Associate
Professor, Algoma University College. "The Community Resilience Sault
Ste. Marie Project will assist our community in strengthening our local
economy."
Today's investment was made through the Rural Economic Development (RED)
program, which invests in projects that support sustainable rural economies
and community partnerships, and is a key part of the government's plan
for rural Ontario. The rural plan provides a coordinated framework across
government to build on rural Ontario's strengths - committed people, diverse
economic opportunities, unrivalled resources and a solid sense of community.
