INFRASTRUCTURE ANNOUNCEMENT BENEFITS AGRICULTURE
Long-Term Plan Invests In Agricultural Facilities

GUELPH - The Ontario government's commitment to infrastructure renewal will help support the province's agricultural education, research and laboratory services, Steve Peters, Minister of Agriculture and Food, said today.

"The McGuinty government has once again shown its commitment to the continuing success of Ontario's agri-food industry," said Minister of Agriculture and Food Steve Peters. "The province's planned investment in agricultural research, education and laboratory services will help ensure a strong and prosperous future for one of the most important sectors of our economy."

Earlier this week the Ontario government announced ReNew Ontario, its long-term plan for infrastructure investment. The plan shows how the government will prepare for future growth by concentrating on the priorities Ontarians say are most important: healthcare, education and economic prosperity.

Some of the agri-food sector projects benefiting from $24 million in funding over five years are:

  • Ridgetown College's new Rural Development Centre which will include a combined conference, education and athletic centre.
  • Health and safety upgrades to the Food Safety Laboratory in Guelph, which plays an important role in the government's food inspection program.
  • Addressing renewal needs of Ontario's three agricultural colleges and 14 research stations.

"The government's investment in the University of Guelph's Food Safety Laboratory strengthens our research institution and helps it improve facilities for food safety, ensuring a healthier Ontario," said Liz Sandals, MPP for Guelph-Wellington.

"Education, research and technology are crucial components for the future competitiveness of Ontario's farm industries," said Pat Hoy, MPP Chatham-Kent-Essex. "The skills taught at Ridgetown College and other agricultural colleges help to make Ontario a world leader in the agricultural industry."
