ONTARIO GOVERNMENT OPENS DOORS FOR RURAL YOUTH
Renews Agreement With 4-H Ontario
BARRIE - The Ontario government is strengthening rural communities
by investing in the future of 4-H Ontario, Minister of Agriculture
and Food Steve Peters announced today at the organization's annual
general meeting.
"We're very proud of supporting 4-H Ontario because it provides
young people with the skills, knowledge and leadership capabilities
that continue to mean a real, positive difference in our rural communities,"
Peters said. "We're especially pleased to renew our commitment
to the organization on its 90th anniversary."
Under the agreement, the ministry is providing $2.1 million over
three years to enable 4-H Ontario to deliver hands-on projects ranging
from drama to energy conservation, and career planning to livestock
management to more than 6,500 10 - 21 year olds across the province.
The organization is supported by 1,500 volunteers and led by the Ontario
4-H Council, consisting of 10 elected provincial directors, the president
and past president. These individuals represent 54 local associations.
"This is terrific news for 4-H Ontario," said Shirley Steed,
President, Ontario 4-H Council. "The ministry's significant financial
support to our organization is the 'backbone' of our funding. This
support, in conjunction with our many other supporters, sponsors,
donors and the Ontario 4-H Foundation, provides the funding necessary
for the continued delivery of 4-H in Ontario."
