Traceability is defined as "the ability to trace and follow
food, feed, food-producing animals or substances through all stages
of production and distribution". The Food Safety Initiative is
a federal/provincial program, with the objective of promoting and
enhancing food safety in the agri-food sector. Under the Food Safety
Initiative in Ontario, funding has been provided to carry out Traceability
Pilot Projects for small and medium sized facilities (less than 100
employees) throughout the agri-food chain.
The objective of the Traceability Pilot Project is to increase industry
understanding and adoption of facility level traceability systems.
The Traceability Pilot Project is a shared venture between the pilot
facility, OMAFRA and an independent consultant contracted to assist
in the design and implementation of a facility level traceability
system. By demonstrating the implementation of traceability systems
in a wide range of settings, OMAFRA and the industry will better understand
the costs, benefits, opportunities and challenges associated with
implementing traceability.
OMAFRA is pleased to announce the twenty (20) pilot facilities that
were chosen to participate in the Traceability Pilot Project: 9 from
the on-farm sector, and 11 from the processing sector. The twenty
pilot facilities selected are representative of Ontario's agri-food
sectors in terms of commodity and size, and are located across the
province. It is anticipated that the pilot sites will benefit from
participation in this project through increased or sustained market
access, reduced impact of product recall, reduced costs of liability
and improved business performance through supply chain optimization.
