Description:

The Food Inspection Branch ensures compliance with legislated standards for dairy, dairy analogs, eggs, fruit and vegetables, meat and livestock products, by providing inspection services at processing plants and other points of distribution, and by placing accountability for product safety on licensed operators. It is responsible for establishing standards and coordinating policy development to ensure a coordinated approach with other ministries, to provide a strategic and dynamic food inspection environment in Ontario.

The branch also evaluates financial responsibility of applicants and issues licences under the Beef Cattle Financial Protection Program which requires beef dealers to be licensed in Ontario in order to purchase beef cattle or carcasses sold on a rail grade basis. The program provides for financial protection to the seller, i.e. producers, sales barn operators and county dealers, on the sale of beef

The Food Inspection Branch comprises of the following units: Dairy Food Safety,
Foods of Plant Origin
, Meat Inspection Operations, and Food Safety Information Systems Unit.
