Meat Plant Assistance Program

The purpose of the Meat Plant Assistance Program (MPAP) is to provide assistance to operators of non-federally registered slaughter plants (abattoirs) and freestanding meat plants in Ontario, for expenditures required to meet the new meat regulation (Ontario Regulation 31/05) under the Food Safety and Quality Act, 2001.

Deadlines

The application deadlines have passed for the following categories:

  • Abattoirs and Large Free Standing Meat Plants (producing more than 1 million kg annually)
  • Medium Free Standing Meat Plants (processing between 500,000 and 1 million kg annually)

The application deadline for Small Free Standing Meat Plants - Category Two (processing less than 500,000 kg annually) is February 15, 2008. Plants that have not yet applied are advised to submit an application as soon as possible prior to this deadline.

Plants that have previously submitted an application, but have not yet reached the maximum provincial contribution of $25,000, may submit an additional application by February 15, 2008. Applications received after this date will not be processed.

Questions and Answers

Q1. How can I get an application form for the Meat Plant Assistance Program?
A1. Application forms for the Meat Plant Assistance Program are available by calling 1-866-641-3663. You are encouraged to submit an application as soon as possible, however there are specific application deadlines for each type of meat processor.

Q2. Who is eligible for the program?
A2. The following meat processors are eligible for funding:

  • Slaughter plants (abattoirs) that are or will be subject to the new meat regulation (Ontario Regulation 31/05) under the Food Safety and Quality Act, 2001.
  • " Free-standing meat plants (FSMPs) that have been continuously in the business of processing meat (including seasonal operations) since February 10, 2005, and are subject to, or will be subject to, the new meat regulation (Ontario Regulation 31/05) under the Food Safety and Quality Act, 2001.
