Ontario's Meat Regulation (Reg. 31/05 under the Food Safety and Quality Act, 2001) has been changed to provide options for cattle and pig producers who want to slaughter animals on their farm and have the carcass processed in a provincially licensed meat plant. The products can only be consumed by the producer and their immediate family on the premises where the animal was slaughtered. Products cannot be sold or distributed.
The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is holding public sessions to provide more information about the requirements under the regulation. These sessions will be of interest to cattle and swine producers, meat plant operators, and those interested in providing on-farm slaughter services.
