Peach Grading and Packing Manual

This manual is a summary of the regulations which apply to the grading, packing and marking of peaches in the ProPeach Grading and Packing Manualvince of Ontario. It is supplied by the Food Inspection Branch to assist in the marketing of peaches in Ontario.

Regulation 378/90 under the Farm Products Grades and Sales Act is the source of this information.

Grades

The grades and grade names for peaches are Canada No. 1, Ontario Domestic Split-pit and "UTILITY"(Check "UTILITY" requirements at end of grades). All peaches sold in Ontario must be properly packed to the grade standards and marked accordingly.

The following table identifies the requirements of the Canada No. 1, Ontario Split-pit grades.

Properly Packed

When packaged, the peaches must not be slack, overpressed or otherwise in a condition likely to result in permanent damage during handling or in transit.

Condition

Peaches must be free from condition defect such as decay, breakdown, freezing injury, soft or shrivelled specimens, overripeness or other injury affecting the keeping quality.

Scale Injury and San Jose Scale

Must not exceed 2 spots which contrast sharply with the background colour of the peach.

Bruises

Individual bruises must not exceed ½ inch (13mm) in diameter or affect an aggregate area exceeding ¾ inch (19mm) in diameter.

Maturity

Peaches must be uniformly mature but not overripe and have a yellow background. Pressure test shall not exceed 18 lbs. With a 5/16 inch (8mm) plunger.

Size

Peaches must have a minimum diameter of 2 1/8 inches (54mm) before August 15 and a minimum diameter of 2 ¼ inches (57mm) after August 15.

Peaches in a package may not vary more than ¼ inch (6mm) in diameter.

Peaches must be a minimum of 2 1/8 inches (53mm) in diameter.

Shape

Peaches must be well formed, meaning that the peaches have a shape which is characteristic of the variety when mature.

Must be free from slight deformities which affect an aggregate area of more than 15% of the peach.

Cleanliness

Peaches must be fairly clean so that individual peaches are free form dirt, dust, spray residue or other foreign material that is noticeably in contrast with the colour of the peach.

Insect Injury and Disease

Must be free from insect injury or disease. Peaches may have plant bug injury that is not sunken or pitted, not deforming the peach or not affecting an aggregate area per peach of more than ½ inch (13mm) in diameter.

Not more than 5% of the surface of a peach may be affected by mildew, scab, ink spots and oakbug injury.

Russetting

Must be free from marks that are:

  1. Rough.
  2. Dark in color and affect an aggregate area exceeding ½ inch (13mm) in diameter.
  3. Fine, light in colour and affect an aggregate area exceeding 15% of the surface.

Marks must not exceed an aggregate area of 5% of the surface.

Limb Rub

Marks must not exceed 3 per peach or affect an aggregate area exceeding ½ inch (13mm) in diameter.

Must not exceed 5% of the surface of the peach.

Hail Marks

None allowed.

Hail marks must not affect more than 10% of the surface, have indented the skin more than slightly or broken the skin.

Sunscald

None allowed.

Must not affect an aggregate area of more than 5% of the surface. Cracked skin due to sunscald is not allowed.

Split Pits

Must be free from split pits.

Split pits are allowed to be sold prior to August 15 and must be free from mildew in the pit cavity.

Combination of Defects

A combination of two or more of the above specified defects must not in aggregate exceed the greater single area tolerance prescribed for the particular defects of the combination.

Other Injury, Defect or Damage

Peaches must be free from any other damage, injury or defect, or combination thereof which is not specifically referred to in the above which materially affects their appearance, edibility or shipping quality.

"Utility" Grade

This grade applies to the sale of ungraded peaches directly to the consumer from the premises on which they were grown. The peaches must be packed in 8 or 11 quart baskets, ½ bushel and 1 bushel containers marked with the word "UTILITY" in letters of at least 1 inch in height. These peaches cannot be advertise in any way.

Packing Level Tolerances

The following tolerances by count apply to any package or lot of peaches before the package or lot would fail to meet the grade requirements at the packing level:

    1. 5% of the peaches by count may be outside the size requirement.
    2. 10% of the packages of peaches may contain more than 10% of the peaches exceeding the maximum prescribed size variation.
    3. 3% of the peaches by count in a lot may be affected by decay.
    4. 5% of the peaches by count in a lot may have the same grade defect.
    5. 10% of the peaches by count in a lot may have grade defects of any kind (including decay but not size) providing the individual tolerances for each defect are not exceeded.

Additional Destination Tolerances

In addition to those tolerances permitted at packing level, another 5 % of the peaches by count in the lot may have condition defects (of which not more than 2 % is decay) at any other subsequent level of trade. Condition defects are those which can develop or worsen after packing (i.e. bruising, crushing, decay, freezing, overheating etc.).

Markings

All packages of peaches must be marked with the following:

    1. Name and Address of Packer.
    2. Grade.
    3. Country or Canadian Province of origin in the form of " Product of ".
    4. The word "Peaches" where the product is not visible.
    5. The net weight of the contents on catchweight (random weight) packages.
    6. The minimum diameter on baskets or containers or untiered peaches as prescribed for the grade, or any diameter larger than the minimum.
    7. Numerical count on tiered containers.

    Note:

    1. The grade and origin markings must be immediately adjacent to one another and of the same size print.
    2. All required markings must be of a print at least 1/8 inch in height on tags and ¼ inch in height on all other packages (baskets, cartons, etc).
    3. Capacity markings must be at least ½ inch in height for baskets 2 to 11 quart, 2 and 4 litre capacity and for cartons of ½ and 1 bushel capacity.
    4. All markings must be legible, of a permanent nature, and of a size reasonable in proportion to the size proportional to the size of the package or label.

Packages

Peaches may be packed in the following containers:

    1. Half pint, pint or quart.
    2. 2 and 4 litre baskets.
    3. 2, 4, 6, 8, and 11 quart baskets.
    4. 16 quart half bushel hamper and 32 quart bushel hamper.
    5. 1,110 cubic inch half bushel box, carton or crate.
    6. 1440 cubic inch 2/3 bushel hamper.
    7. 2,220 cubic inch bushel box, carton or crate.
    8. Boxes, cartons or crates measuring 16 1/8 x 11 ½ x 5 ¾ inches with endpieces of either 3 ¾ or 4 ¾ inch side pieces.
    9. Panta pak container measuring 16 ¼ x 13 ½ x 6 ½ inches.
    10. A consumer tray pack (catchweight package) of any weight up to 3 pounds.

Bilingual and Metric Requirements

All markings on packages of peaches should be printed in equal prominence in both English and French as there is a possibility of export from Ontario. Names and Addresses are required only once.

Federal law requires that all net quantity markings be printed in Imperial measure (pounds, quarts. etc.) with the equivalent Metric measure of the same size.
