As of July 12, 2007, a CFIA permit is required by producers for transporting Emergency Slaughter (ES) cattle with specified risk material (SRM) to a provincial plant. A CFIA transport permit is required for each ES occurrence. This allows the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to track and maintain continuous control over SRM, to ensure that it does not enter livestock feed, pet food or fertilizer.
To obtain a CFIA (Emergency Slaughter) Transport permit, call 1-866-788-8155.

The CFIA has requested that the district office closest to your area be contacted during regular business hours to arrange the permit. (CFIA district office)

You will be asked for information by a CFIA inspector on-call. Be prepared to give the following information:

  • plant name where ES is going
  • producer name, mailing address (including postal code), 911 number (including county), and phone number,
  • make, colour and plate number of the vehicle to be used to transport the ES.
  • CCIA tag number or ES leg band number
  • CFIA district office location for the county where your farm is located.

At the conclusion of the call, the CFIA inspector will provide the number of a CFIA transport permit. The CFIA district office will follow-up with the producer in the days following the issuance of a permit.
