Labour Market Information (LMI) is industry specific research designed to give a comprehensive overview of that sector’;s workforce. For example, this can include information about occupations and labour market trends and outlooks, including skill or labour shortages and surpluses, and statistics on the working-age population.

Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC)

Working in Canada is the Government of Canada's leading source for labour market information, offering resources to employers, researchers and job seekers. It also offers users free occupational and career information such as job opportunities, educational requirements, main duties, wage rates and salaries, current employment trends and outlooks.

Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPS) HRSDC develops projections of future labour demand and labour supply by broad skill level and by occupation, using the models of the Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPS). The focus of the COPS models and projections is on the trends in labour supply, labour demand and in their respective components and determinants over a 10-year span. Users can search for occupational summaries, more detailed data and technical documents on the results or the methodology used to do the projections. Labourers in Food and Beverage Processing are represented by National Occupational Classification (NOC) code 9617.

Food Processing HR Council (FPHRC)

In 2011, FPHRC developed a series of reports titled "Who is Processing Your Food?" They are based on findings from a LMI data gathering project which aimed to provide a basis for more effective future human resources planning. The principle purpose of the LMI project was to undertake a detailed food processing industry labour market supply/demand analysis that can be used as a guide for employers to forecast their HR strategies, for general information about the industry, as a resource for students, etc.

The data used in the LMI report comes from a variety of different sources, incorporating both primary and secondary research. The FPHRC contracted a company to conduct primary research including nation-wide focus groups, employer surveys and in-depth interviews with industry experts. The main source of our secondary research featured in the LMI report is from Statistics Canada. The report is available for purchase at the FPHRC's website.
