Chudleigh's Ltd.

Chudleigh's frozen desserts and snacks can be found in supermarkets around the globe.

Established in Milton, Ontario in 1981, Chudleigh's Ltd. manufactures frozen desserts and snacks, such as apple pies, crisps and crumbles, using only the freshest ingredients from start to finish. Innovation and integration are the focus for Chudleigh's, which harvests 60% of the Northern Spy apples grown in Ontario, a superior-tasting variety that's uniquely grown in the province. The apples are peeled fresh every day and used in Chudleigh's products year-round. At an 82,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility in Milton, Chudleigh's employs 300 staff during the peak of harvest season.

Chudleigh's started exporting its products in 1990, supplying them to branded, private-label and food service industries in Australia, the US, the UK, Mexico, Japan, the Philippines and Europe. The company holds a BRC "A" certification (British Retail Consortium), required by some international buyers for international markets, such as all grocery chains in the UK. "We're pleased to be one of the first, and continue to be one of only a handful of bakers in Ontario with BRC certification," says Lela Colangelo, Director, National Retail Sales, Chudleigh's. Today, 70% of Chudleigh's business is exports and the company's products can be found in the top 20 grocery chains in North America. As a result of its success and commitment to export, Chudleigh's plans to add an additional 30,000 sq. ft. to its existing facility in 2011.

Over the years the company has encountered and overcome various exporting challenges, including dairy restrictions in the Australian market and sourcing GMO-compliant ingredients for the UK. "You need to have an ingredient deck that meets international standards so we had to reformulate and find the correct sources to make sure we're compliant," says Colangelo. "We were unable to do any international business with top-tier customers until we got BRC certification. But once you're BRC-certified, you can really sell to anyone."

Working with the OFEX team has helped ensure exporting success; Chudleigh's participated in OFEX trade missions to meet US and other international buyers. "OFEX has been instrumental in helping us with buyer introductions," says Colangelo. Building strong relationships with new and existing customers through close communication is a top priority for Chudleigh's. "It's the key to developing the right products," says Colangelo. "Our customer's success is our success."
