BFG Canada Ltd.
This Ontario private label
cracker manufacturer is a leader in innovative product development.
Before being acquired by Ralcorp Holdings, Inc., the leading value-brand
and store-brand producer, headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri,
BFG Canada Ltd. started as PL Foods Ltd. in 1991, with one baking
oven to serve one UK customer. More than 15 years later, in 2007,
partners from PL Foods formed JT Bakeries for the purpose of manufacturing
private label crackers for the export market. The company significantly
expanded its manufacturing capacity and was shipping to clients
throughout North America and the US by the time they consolidated
management under Ralcorp, with the new company name BFG Canada in
2010. BFG Canada's two separate plants in Georgetown and Kitchener,
Ontario have both received British Retail Consortium (BRC) certification,
the highest globally recognized food safety accreditation.
Specializing in private label and gourmet snack crackers, BFG Canada
manufactures more than 50 varieties of crackers including water
crackers, whole wheat, whole grain, cheese and multigrain offerings.
Responding to consumer demand, the company also offers organic,
non-GMO, low-calorie, kosher and wellness products in a wide variety
of packaging formats. "We are a leader in product development,"
says Ray Franklin, Vice President, International Business Development.
"We have the expertise to customize products and provide innovation
solutions for our customers and we specialize in emulating national
brands and modifying formulas to meet specific country regulations,
such as developing products for the UK market with non-GMO ingredients."
To develop its exporting business in the early years, the company
sought support from OFEX to help identify market trends, find buyer
contacts and gather information regarding exporting regulations
specific to each country. BFG Canada continues to participate in
OFEX events such as the Street Smart incoming mission that connects
US buyers with qualified Ontario suppliers and will attend SIAL
Canada this year. "These events are extremely valuable,"
says Franklin. BFG Canada will be exhibiting their products at the
Private Label Manufacturers' Association (PLMA) trade show in the
Canadian pavilion in Amsterdam this year.
Today, BFG Canada's customers include major retailers in North
America, the UK, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Australia and South Africa.
"We're very customer-focused and pride ourselves on developing
long-term collaborations with retailers," says Franklin. "One
of our strengths is visiting the markets to personally meet with
potential and existing customers. Nothing fosters a connection with
a customer more than personal dialogue."
